Yes, It’s Christmas Season Already
The day after Thanksgiving is the earliest retailers can in good conscience begin to anticipate Christmas, so apart from the Black Friday shopping madness, holiday events have sprung up around Washington, D.C. starting on Friday. In Virginia, Friday is the first day of Christmas at Mount Vernon, a special daytime program that runs through January and offers themed decorations, 18th-century dancing, and access to the otherwise rarely seen third floor of the mansion. Tickets are $15 for adults, $14 for seniors 62 and older, $7 for kids 6 to 11, and free for kids 5 and under. It’s an extra $5 for the special Dinner for the Washingtons walking tour on weekends at 1 p.m.
And although the biggest tree-lighting ceremonies aren’t for another two weeks, several celebrations do kick off this Friday. Out in Market Square in Alexandria, for example, the tree is lit at 7:05 p.m. and Santa arrives to distribute candy canes at 7:30. A schedule of events is available here. At National Harbor the tree-lighting countdown begins at 7 p.m. and ends with fireworks at 11 p.m. At Reston Town Center, the day starts with a Holiday Parade at 11 a.m. and ends with the tree-lighting at 6 p.m.
Yes, It’s Also Nutcracker Season
Of course, Christmas season also means productions of the Nutcracker, and this weekend offers three. The Washington Ballet performs it this Saturday and Sunday at THEARC Theater, at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 to $45. The Fairfax Ballet Company performs it Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., at W.T. Woodson High School. Tickets are $22 or $25. Finally, the Classical Ballet Theatre of Northern Virginia dances at the Ernst Community Cultural Center Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults; $20 for students, seniors, and children; and $18 for Girl Scouts and members of the military. (If you are looking to save some money, Goldstar has discounted tickets for these performances of the Nutcracker as well as many other holiday events.)
