Washington, D.C. Events for the Weekend of April 6-8, 2012

Even More Blooming Events

The Cherry Blossom Festival continues this week with lots more to do. Every day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m., join National Park Service rangers at the Jefferson Memorial or FDR Memorial for half-hour tours covering a variety of cherry blossom–related topics. Or on Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m., join them at the National Park Service Welcome Tent (on the Tidal Basin not too far from the paddle-boat rentals) for a two-hour lantern-lit walk. Bring your bike to the Jefferson Memorial at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and they’ll even take you on a three-hour bike tour. All are free. You could also join one of the many Blossom By Bike Tours or Blossom By Bike River Tours led by Bike and Roll, which depart from the Old Post Office Pavilion, Union Station, or Old Town Alexandria and cost either $35 or $42. Take a free yoga class at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at the National Mall at Sylvan Theater, on the grounds of the Washington Monument. On Saturday from 1p.m. to 9 p.m. join the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival. Finally, on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. join the National Conference of State Societies at the Tidal Basin for the Official Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony, the venerable, free occasion that opens the Cherry Blossom Princess festivities.

Pillow Fight!

Saturday is International Pillow Fight Day—on which, as advertised, groups all around the world stage massive pillow fights. In Washington, D.C. the event is organized by Capitol Improv, which asks potential participants to gather on the National Mall near the Smithsonian Castle at 1:30 p.m., with pillows concealed and glasses safely removed. A second fight will happen at Dupont Circle at 3 p.m. No down pillows please.
