Washington, D.C. Events for the Weekend of April 27-29, 2012

The Final Blooming Event

Finish off the Cherry Blossom Festival with a block party: this year’s PetalFest at the Woodrow Wilson Plaza (at Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street, NW). Enjoy free live performances from 5 to 8 p.m.

Maryland’s Open House

For 14 years the University of Maryland has been holding annual Maryland Days, throwing open its doors to entertain and educate the public. And what might sound like a strange way to spend a day—at a college open house—has become amazingly popular: nearly 100,000 people attended last year. That might be because the university bends over backwards to make the event fun, offering the chance to use their climbing wall, play Quidditch, float in their giant neutral buoyancy tank, visit an insect zoo, and this year, meet Elmo’s creator. But there are also lots and lots of educational events throughout Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See the full schedule at www.marylandday.umd.edu. Admission and parking are free.

Sweet Music

Also on Saturday, starting at noon at the Merriweather Post Pavilion, is this year’s Sweetlife Food & Music Festival, put on by the restaurant group sweetgreen. Hear 18 different bands, headlined by Avicii, Kid Cudi, and The Shins, and sample food from 33 different restaurants and vendors, including Jose Andres, Momofuku Milk Bar, and the Shake Shack. Tickets are $75, $125 for VIP access.
